7 Simple SEO Tips and Tricks for Your Online Store

seo-tipsHere are seven of the easiest search engine optimization (SEO) techniques that ANYONE can implement in their online store.  No tech department needed!!!

Research Your Keywords

Hopefully, you know how important keywords are to an online business.  Keywords are really KEY to organic search, pay-per-click, site search, customer behavior and more.

It’s important to research the best keywords for you.  You’ll want to place your keywords strategically in the following areas: Page title, Meta tags, page content, headings, images, internal and external links and more.

Title Tags

Title tags are one of the most important (and easiest) page elements to control.  These important page elements are a big contributing factor to a page’s ranking and are highly effective in telling the search engines what your page is about.  Optimizing title tags is a must for any online store.  And don’t forgot to put the branding aside and include the most important keyword(s) at the beginning of the title tag.  Put the name of your company at the end of the title (if at all).

META Description Tag

Often you don’t hear many SEO experts talk about this tag, but for an online store, it can be the difference of getting a visitor to click to your site or not.  Adjust your META Description tags to include a call to action (e.g. Shop for X, Y and Z at YOURSTORE.com.  Easy online shopping, no-hassle returns.)

Page Content

By concentrating on providing quality information on your homepage, department pages, product pages and other appropriate store pages, your online store gains relevance.  Relevance is key for search engines.  By writing good, unique content on your pages, you can gain better search engine rankings and separate your online store from the competition.  Also, unique content on your site can attract inbound links which will help your SEO efforts.

H1 Tags

H1 tags (along with Title tags) are current two of the most powerful ways to tell the search engines about each page on your online store.  Plus, these are super-easy to implement.  One H1 tags per page, please.

Homepage Links

Often your homepage is the most important page to search engines.  For instance, Google’s Pagerank might rank it the most important page on your site.  You’ll often find the most powerful internal links you have on your site live on the homepage.  Therefore, it’s a good idea to use links on your homepage to help your SEO efforts.

Sitemap

Your sitemap, a page that live on your site that lists other pages on your site, is often great fodder for search engine spiders.  They come by your site and follow these internal links that can take the spiders to popular and not so popular pages on your site.  The sitemap can give exposure to pages that don’t have many internal links within your online store, thus helping index these hidden pages.

These are just some of the super simple SEO techniques that can be implemented.  What are your favorites?

  1. Great post! Just wanted to let you know you have a new subscriber- me!

  2. Give each category a decent description, and use HeadSpace to add that description to the meta description, by adding %%category_description%% in the Description field. After that, write a description for each post or page that you actually want to rank with. The descriptions has one very important function: enticing people to click, so make sure it states what’s in the page they’re clicking towards, and that it gets their attention.
